The 2024 ELECTION threw me for a loop; I have reflected and read and listened and analyzed over and over and have been slow to  accept that the House, Senate , and Presidency were won by the MAGA Republicans. My home state of Michigan elected a Democrat, Elissa Slotkin, to an open Senate seat, but the presidential vote went to Donald Trump. These results mystified and immobilized me for months. Only recently have I begun to crawl out of my deep dark depression and begin to engage in thinking and doing any type of active civic engagement. I figured that opportunities would present themselves along the way.  Last  month, Cathe and I drove to Washington D.C. ,  camped in the Beltway National Campground near College Park, Maryland and participated in "Moral Monday"sponsored by "Repairers of the Breach", led by Rev. I'VE LOOKED AT LIFE FROM BOTH SIDES NOW

  The question of how to respond to disturbing information has challenged me for many years. I consider myself generally hopeful and optimistic. When presented with sad news, I've often listened and quickly changed the subject or looked for the silver lining. When feelings are involved, I don’t identify them; I've been told by my family that I'm in denial.  Rather than face the facts, feel the suffering, or sadness, or anger, or conflict, I want to move on right away. My approach starts with the rational side of events. I think, analyze, compare and contrast quickly rather than feel what’s happening in the present moment.  For example, on January 6th, 2021, while watching Congress prepare to certify the 2020 Election , my initial reaction to protesters storming the Capitol was to disbelieve what I was watching on live T.V. A Reflection as the Season Turns

  This  Season generates a myriad of memories, feelings, hopes, dreams and plans along with  melancholy  for me.  I find myself remembering people that have passed away this year. Holiday Seasons past included family members in hospital and the funerals of close friends.  November 2025 brought a birthday that's more eventful than previous ones, a reminder that I'm closer to 80 than 70 and that I'm deep into  the "4th Quarter."  It's sobering to realize that overtime is unlikely in this game. 2025 included shocks to our political/economic context and attacks on democracy itself. The oligarchs' relentless rapid deployment of algorithms to influence every decision we make motivated by unfettered avarice stuns one's sense of humanity.  An old friend writes about his depression in his 'golden years' due to watching the degradation of decency and morality in the U.S.A.
